Flexenergy, based in Glenrothes is celebrating their 20-year milestone.  Formed in May 2001 by Managing Director, Ian Wightman.  Flexenergy is one of the leading UK wide exponents of thermoplastic pre-insulated pipeline products.  Commonly used in the distribution of hot water, commonly deployed in District Heating systems.

The business, although based in Scotland has a wide reach across the UK and Ireland.  With their expertise and products used in countless prestigious and important projects.  Examples are London Square, Bermondsey, Aviemore District Heating Scheme, Edinburgh Castle, Slimbridge Waterfowl Centre, Caernarfon Castle and Plymouth City District Heating scheme to name but a few.

Despite the lockdown and the restrictions on travel in Scotland, the business continued to support and deliver projects throughout. This ensured essential building work continued.  Flexenergy employs 6 people across all business disciplines. This includes a manufacturing team that design and build intricate fabrications and valve assemblies. This in-house service speeds up on site installation and operation.

Origins

The inception of Flexenergy was in 90’s.  Ian Wightman and Sandy Fairley, now the Sales Director, worked together in a pipe distribution company and were introduced to polybutylene (PB) pipe.  PB is commonly used in Europe for community heating schemes and had found its way into the UK for small scale pipeline projects as an alternative to the traditional steel systems that suffer from corrosion issues.

This seed of an idea was developed by Ian who formed Flexenergy in 2001,  Sandy joined soon after to head up the sales into Consulting Engineers and Contractors across the UK and they haven’t looked back.

In the 20 years, they have witnessed a changing market, but have adapted and introduced new products to stay ahead of the game.

The Future

The rise of renewables as an alternative energy source and the geothermal applications for their products and knowledge has increased significantly. This culture shift driven by environmental pressure has enabled Flexenergy to contribute in the race to Net Zero.

To celebrate their remarkable business, the team will cut and enjoy a specially commissioned cake in the shape of a pre-insulated pipe at 13.00 Thursday 27th 2021, the press is invited to attend to capture this significant local and national success story.

A short film celebrating this 20 year story is here to watch.
